Foot care, footwear and orthotics

Practical daily habits that protect feet with reduced sensation, plus how AFOs and insoles help with foot drop.
Feet do a lot of work in CMT. Weak ankle muscles, high arches and reduced sensation together increase the risk of trips, sprains, calluses and unnoticed wounds.
Check your feet daily in good light — top, sole, heel and between the toes — for redness, blisters, cracks or cuts. Reduced sensation means an injury can go unnoticed until it becomes serious.
Choose shoes with a firm heel counter, a wide toe box, good depth for insoles and secure fastening. Avoid loose slip-ons and very flat, unsupportive footwear for long walking.
Ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) are commonly prescribed for foot drop. They hold the foot at a safe angle so the toes clear the ground, which reduces tripping and saves energy. Custom insoles can offload pressure points in a high-arched foot.
An orthotist and physiotherapist should be part of your care team. Braces should be reviewed periodically as needs change, and any new pressure mark from a brace should be reported promptly.
