Exercise, physiotherapy and energy management

4 min read

Moderate, regular, low-impact activity with a physiotherapist's guidance — plus pacing to manage fatigue.

Regular, moderate activity helps maintain range of movement, balance, cardiovascular health and mood. The general principle in CMT is moderate and consistent rather than maximal — over-exertion to the point of exhaustion is not advised.

Low-impact options such as swimming, hydrotherapy, stationary cycling and gentle strength work are often well tolerated. Stretching the calves, hamstrings and plantar fascia helps limit contractures.

Balance training with support nearby can reduce falls. A physiotherapist familiar with neuromuscular conditions should set the programme and adjust it over time.

Fatigue is real and common. Pacing — breaking activity into shorter blocks, planning rest before you are exhausted, and using aids to save energy — is a legitimate management strategy, not a sign of giving up.
