Medicines to discuss with your doctor

3 min read

Some drugs can be toxic to peripheral nerves. Always tell every clinician that you have a neuropathy.

Certain medicines are known to be potentially toxic to peripheral nerves, and people with an inherited neuropathy may be more vulnerable to their effects. Published caution lists include some chemotherapy agents (such as vincristine), and several other drug classes.

This does not mean these medicines can never be used. It means the decision should be made deliberately by your treating doctor, weighing benefit against risk, with monitoring.

Tell every clinician, dentist, surgeon and pharmacist that you have CMT or a peripheral neuropathy, and keep a written list of your current medicines with you.

Never start or stop a prescribed medicine on the basis of an app or website. Bring the question to your neurologist.
